Yaroslavl — Recycling Revolution

Purpose:   Our idea was to create an ecological object from recycled materials and a green space surrounding it, which would encourage people to rediscover social life. We wanted to use simple and easy accessible resources. That is why we chose old cargo containers as our main structure and earth soil for creation of the landscape.

Yaroslavl — Recycling Revolution /2

Concept of the project: Our intervention in the park was supposed to make it more attractive, but at the same time not to destroy its general

composition. We want to keep the main axis of Tchaikovsky Boulevard as the main objective of the park. That is why we decided to dig our objects into the ground and create at the same time interesting and much safer landscape. We hope that various activities that we propose will bring life to social relations of Yaroslavl’s inhabitants.

Yaroslavl — Recycling Revolution /3

This project is a proposal – how to reuse cargo containers. There could be built just one pavilion, containing all of the functions, but we wanted also to create a proposal of bigger composition – three independent, but functionally related pavilions, connected by curving path. As it was mentioned before, we did not want to interrupt the main axis of boulevard. That is why our path is somehow dancing and writhing around it, but never dominating. We also want to keep and preserve al of the beautiful trees surrounding boulevard- paths and pavilions are always situated between them!

Main elements of the project are: Recycled pavilions, covering them artificial hills, digged in those hills social nests.

Yaroslavl — Recycling Revolution /4

Technical description:  Following the ecological objectives we would like to propose to recycle old cargo containers and use them as a main structure of the pavilion. We chose medium size containers with dimensions 12,20m x 2,40m x 2,60m. Because main structure (container) is prefabricated, everything that is needed to be done is to place it in the right spot. All further actions, such us covering it with earth and finishing is so simple, that it could be done by local people. Interior walls are covered by simple wooden MDF plates, which are cheap but practical. They would also perfectly suit its industrial style. Containers made of steel are also rather resistible to vandalism – there is not really much what one can destroy and materials are durable. Moreover pavilion could be locked during the night.

The pavilion may hold different cultural functions, such as small library, mediatheque or café. Library is supposed to be a local platform for book exchange – so called book- crossing, a mediatheque –platform for multimedia exchange equipped with wi-fi connection. It might be a place where people could exchange their old books or download e-books and audiobooks. Everything might be painted regarding the wishes and moods of inhabitants. It may be a perfect place for artistic expression.

Pavilion itself is not the only part of the project designed

with purpose to spend time in it. As it was mentioned before, all pavilions are dig in the ground, or more specifically covered with earth. This allows creating a very interesting surrounding landscape – artificial hills, suitable to relax and to do sports. It is also a great place for children to play, especially in winter, when it might be used for sliding. Soil covering the metal container creates also natural layer of insulation for pavilion.

Yaroslavl — Recycling Revolution / 6

In the artificial hills we would like to propose dig-in seats, which also would be created buy their users- Yaroslavl’s inhabitants. They could give them whichever shape they want. It is also an important moment of participation in construction. Those seats are meant to be a sitting nests for the users of pavilion – to read books, use multimedia or drink coffee. Or just to rest, relax, and have fun with friends. Holes could be bigger, for social integration, or smaller, for individual use. After shaping them we propose to cover them with concrete finishing to prevent them from collapsing.

Yaroslavl — Recycling Revolution /7

The estimated cost of the project: Estimated cost of one pavilion with covering hill and social nests is about 2.900 $

Circle / BLOQ Studio projektowe, Ewa Gumkowska / Poland, Warsaw / Архитектурный объект

Purpose: The main idea of the Circle project is that it is not only an object itself, but also a way to involve citizens of Yaroslavl in some changes taking place in Tschaikovsky Boulevard. They have aunique possibility to be a part of creation process in this public place.

Concept of the project: The simplest but at the same time original idea is the circle shape itself. It just rolls any place we like, what means that the user is the designer as well.  It is permanently in move, what gives us a possibility to create a map of our favorite spots anddiscover new ones!

Circle / 2

Technical description:

Materials (see the components list)

- 2 x steel pipe ø 48.3 x 2.9mm, cold bended and galvanized (circle shape ø 2m);

- Steel pipe ø 48.3 x 2.9mm length= 255cm, galvanized;

- 15 x glued pine-wood plank dimensions: 1.8 x 12.5 x 64cm;

- 60 screws;

- acrylic, structural paint - spray – each color 1 spray bottle;

- Varnish 1.5L

Production (see the step-by-step instruction):

Construction process takes 1 day. Steel elements and wooden planks should be professionally cut, prepared and bended. It should be done in an interior with a possibility of ventilation (process of painting and varnishing steel and wood planks). When the skeleton is ready and all the other elements too, it can be easily combined on the fresh air.

Circle is easy in use and multifunctional. The idea is, that it becomes, what we want it to be – a bench, a hammock, and amerry-go-round. It depends on us!

Circle / 3

The estimated cost of the project: Approximately 200€ (depends on a price of the elements).

The main idea of the urban project called CIRCLE is that this object can be personalized by any user, whom it simply fits.

First of all CIRCLE can be rolled to any place one likes. This seldom possibility, to pick a favorite spot in Tschaikovsky Boulevard and put the CIRCLE right there, makes each user a kind of creator of the public space. This gives a great opportunity to involve Yaroslavls citizens and show them that they can actually take part in these important changes by saying:

“Hey, look what I have found — that’s the most beautiful place in this park. Look around at these magnificent surroundings, trees, blue sky and space!”

This advantage of “moving the circle around” is the basic idea of this urban project and its “round” shape. It unites citizens in creating a unique map of favorite spots and views in Tschaikovsky Boulevard. It shows exactly what habitants particularly like about this park. It gives also a valuable information about what and where something could be done to arrange this space according to their needs and make them proud of this place.

Circle 4

Further, CIRCLE can be used it any possible way. It becomes what we want it to be! It is up to the user whether he/she wants to lay down, sit, sway or simply climb it and obviously roll at the same time. It can be a lonely island for those, who need peace and relax in quiet or suddenly change into a merry-go-round with friends and some good laugh.

CIRCLE is a simple and ecological idea for the modern city, like Yaroslavl. Its scale, materials and colors go perfectly with human needs of comfort, fun, action and essential meaning of beauty. It is designed for people but they are the ones, who decide, how and where to use it.

CIRCLE is an invitation. Join the CIRCLE and share the idea with the others.

Little house / BLOQ Studio projektowe, Ewa Gumkowska / Poland, Warsaw / Архитектурный объект

Purpose: Its main idea is to gather people and give them a safe andcomfortable space no matter the age, hobbies and social class.

Concept of the project: The main idea is to create a place in a place, which means, that it’s funny and cool to spend some quality time in a Little House instead of any other café or pub. What’ more it fulfills every need, it fits everybody – families, old and young people, groups and single. The house shape is an international symbol that everybody understands. It has positive associations what, in my opinion, can really influence people and make them more friendly and open to their neighbors.

Little House is a functional public space object dedicated to all its users. It fulfills every need as well for privacy and comfort as for interesting social life.

Little house / facade

The estimated cost of the project: Approximately 500€ (depends on a price of the elements).

Project of a Little House is dedicated to all citizens of Yaroslavl. Its main goal is to serve people, no matter the age, style of living or hobbies. It is a home where everybody is welcome. It is timeless and universal.

Obviously, in every park there are places to seat, chat and relax. However, Little House is much more than that. It is not only an object, it is a place itself, like any other club, park, boulevard, cinema, which give a possibility to identify with.

“Hey guys, where shall we meet? –Let’s meet in a Little House tonight!”

“Where do you want to go? – We can grab something to eat and meet in a Little House, maybe play some Monopoly or chess.”

Little House creates here a new value that can have a big impact on both communication and integration of Yaroslavls’ inhabitants.

A house itself is an international symbol of community, love, friendship, food, laugh, play and fun. It is used here for this certain reason. It gathers people, helps integrate. These four walls and a table areenough to fulfill every need one has. One can chat, have a snack, organize a picnic, play chess, cards, read and do homework. It is multifunctional and for that reason dedicated to all age groups and all social units. Open for young and old, families with children, couples looking for a romantic place.

What’s most important, everybody’s welcome in this House. Little House gives us, simultaneously, a chance to spend some time in the open among other people as well as  privacy, peace and comfort inside. It is a shelter in the trees, a parking place for everyone, who wants to be a part of this communication process.

What’s more it is environmentally friendly. Wood and invisible metal construction makes it look like if it grew in this park as any other tree. Natural colors of the house intensify this effect. This natural look has a great impact on interaction between the new object and its user. It builds in the new object into our well known comfort zone as if the park were always Little House’s natural environment. It perfectly fits in.

Little House is a part of a social project. Its main idea is to gather people and give them a safe andcomfortable space.
